Special Education is not quite an area I feel comfortable giving 100% recommendations. I went to my friend, Charlie for help. He really liked books that are interactive and drawing apps that simulate finger painting. I will added more as I try apps out.
Picaa: Interactive and Cooperative Platform to Support Learning.
Picaa aims to bring flexibility and adaptability in the education of children with special needs. More innovating factors of the platform are:
- It is designed like a mobile platform, following an approach where activities run on entertainment mobile devices that turn out to be more attractive to users.
- It provides support for group work, fostering integration and interaction with other users.
- It has the capability of user adaptation and content customization.
ArtikPix has flashcard and matching activities to address articulation difficulties. The activities include features such as recorded audio, voice recording, and data collection to help children with speech sound delays. Children use ArtikPix to practice sounds independently, with a speech-language pathologist or their parents.
ArtikPix has a total of 14 decks with 40 cards in each (560 total cards) for the following sounds: th, f, v, ch, sh, k, g, s, z, l, r, s-blends, l-blends, and r-blends.
In the flashcard activity, the sounds are organized by beginning, middle and ending position of words. The flashcards are arranged in an easy-to-use flick album. In the matching activity, the words are randomized in easy (3 pairs), medium (6 pairs), and hard (10 pairs) levels. The matching involves a fun game with animated sounds and motions.
An education and therapy tool, Accessible Curriculum Tools - (ACT) Spell - has large implications for the special needs community, enabling facilitators to build custom user programs targeting specific vocabulary and assisting motor, visual and neurological skills. Clean and clear compared to many existing games and educational apps, it provides brilliance in its simple functionality and return to basics, where many in the special needs community need to start to train their motor/visual/executive function systems to align and work together.

iSpeech for iPAD
Developed in conjunction with a licenced speech pathologist, iSpeech is an excellent tool for teaching and practicing speech therapy at home.
Wrapped up in a fun and attractive user interface, sounds are organized by the ages at which they should have developed, giving you benchmarks for where your child should be developmentally. Any problem sounds can then be selected to display the teaching information for that sound.

MirrorPaint Lite is a simple painting application for children, as well as adults. It allows you to paint using reflections creating a kaleidoscope effect. It also introduces the basics of scripting using a simple language called Logo.
You have two toolbars in which you can select pen width, number of reflections, a bomb and a clear tool, and a color palette to choose the pen color to paint with. Use your finger and drag around in the main view and you will see your painting reflected in the mirrors. The rainbow color tool (only available in full version) will change the color of the pen over time to all the colors of the rainbow. The Color Picker tool will bring up a color picker to allow you to choose any color to draw in. The Bomb tool will erase the current view in the current pen color whereas the erase tool will erase the view to white.
